How to Get Rid of Dark Circles Under the Eyes

Blog picA combination of different factors can conspire to form dark circles: aging, sun damage, heredity, allergies, and even poor lighting.

Probably the only fat you don’t want to lose lies right under your eye and above the cheekbone, called the infra orbital fat pad. It thins with age, producing a sunken appearance. Light reflects off this recessed area, creating the illusion of shadowy circles. (Contrary to popular believe, most dark circles have nothing to do with actual changes in skin color.)

Because of aging and sun damage (with some genetic tenancy thrown in for good measure) microscopic blood vessels under the eyes can lose their stability and strength. The body compensates by forming lots of tiny new veins. A thinner fat pad means those veins are closer to the skin’s surface. The result: darker dark circles.

There are reports that creams containing Vitamin K can help strengthen the walls of the tiny veins that peak through your skin, causing them to be less visible. You can find these creams by doing a Google search for “Vitamin K eye creams”. A product was introduced to the market recently called Hylexin which is supposed to effectively treat the problem of dark undereye circles rather than just cover them up. In a study, almost 3/4 of women who had dark circles and used this product saw visible reduction in the color and severity of their dark circles. Preliminary reports look good although this product is quite expensive at almost $100 per bottle.
A couple of quick fixes:

  • Apply moist cool tea bags (caffeinated, like Earl Grey or English breakfast) is a quick fix for puffiness. the tannins in the tea decrease the inflammation, reduce swelling. The caffeine draws water from the skin deflating puffiness.
Another fix is cool cucumbers. Enzymes in the cucumber slices reduce the tissue inflammation, shrinking bags and helping erase unbecoming shadows.
These are great appearance enhancers for when you need to look your best. They’re temporary, but they work!
The best bet is to conceal with makeup… Yellow neutralizes blues, purples, and dusky hues on the skin.

Reasons to Have a Professional Facial

Skin Analysis by a trained professional

Study shows that most of people define their skin types and home care incorrectly. Professional aestheticians will provide this information to you correctly.

Deep cleaning of the skin and pores by a professional

Cleansing the skin and pores of dirt, debris and environmental factors can allow our skin to maintain a healthy balance and enhance its ability to fight off disease and aging. It can also enable the skin to better utilize the products that you apply for nourishment, protection and exfoliation.

A professional is trained to perform this service when needed in the least invasive, though effective manner. The skin is prepped with products that ease the procedure, then the professional performs pore cleansing safely, with great results.

Deeper penetration of products through the benefits of professional facial massage

Professional facial massage techniques warm the skin, thus opening the pores to allow deeper penetration of products. Warmth resulting from professional facial massage also dilates the skin and to remove toxins produced during normal metabolism. This stimulation also brings a healthy glow to the skin that only a professional facial massage can produce.

Professional recommendation

Skin care professionals are trained to recommend appropriate professional services that will meet your treatment needs. The professional can also recommend the correct home care program to enable you to meet your goals for your skin.

Professional products

The treatment products used by your skin care professional produce enhanced results in your treatment. Also, the professional level home care product recommended by your skin care specialist will maintain and improve the condition of your skin between services. You will be educated on the benefits of each treatment, the benefits of home care product s and how to use them correctly for achieving your skin care goals.

Differences Between Salicylic, Lactic and Glycolic peels

Differences Between Salicylic, Lactic and Glycolic Peels

What are the differences between Salicylic, Lactic, and Glycolic peels?

The Lactic and Glycolic peels are very similar in their actions, but the molecules are slightly different. A good rule of thumb is the pure Lactic is best for treating age/sun spots and the pure Glycolic is best for treating fine lines. The Glyco/Lac combination is great if you are looking for a revitalizing improvement in tone and texture.

Glycolic Acid is the most active and beneficial of the Alpha-Hydroxy-Acids (AHA) in skin care and is made from sugar canes. It is the only AHA which is able to penetrate through the cell walls by virtue of its small molecular size. Once inside the cell, it will trigger new formation of collagenand turn on the synthesis of dermal glycosaminoglycans to plump up the cell and the ground substances in the skin to reduce wrinkles on the skins surface. Glycolic Acid also affects the newly forming keratin cells at the bottom of the stratum corneum causing the bulk of the stratum corneum to lift off and separate from the underlying skin. This gives the skin a much smoother look and feel.

The Lactic acid is a natural humectant which occurs naturally in the skin, and because of this it is able to pull moisture from the air and hold it in the skin. The Lactic acid is less irritating and more moisturizing than the Glycolic, and the Lactic can be used at a slightly higher concentration than the Glycolic, because it is not as irritating.

Salicylic acid is a mild acid that works as a keratolytic agent it encourages the sloughing of dead skin cells. It’s a safe, effective treatment for mild acne, oily skin, textural changes and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in people of most skin types. Mild acid solutions, such as salicylic acid and glycolic acid, encourage the peeling of the top layer of skin and the opening of plugged follicles, which helps reestablish the normal skin-cell replacement cycle. For milder acne, salicylic acid helps unclog pores to resolve and prevent lesions. It does not have any effect on the production of sebum or the presence of P. acnes bacteria. Like many other topical acne treatments, salicylic acid must be used continuously, even after acne lesions have healed. Its effects stop when you stop using it, so your skin will return to its uneven shedding; pores become clogged, and acne returns.

The Lactic and Salicylic peels complement each other perfectly. The Salicylic is great for acne, but is also drying, and works less well on fading pigmentation. The Lactic acid fades pigmentation and pulls moisture into the skin. So by alternating between the peels you get the benefits of the Salicylic without the excessive dryness, and you get faster improvements to pigmentation and tone.

The biggest difference between the two hydroxyl acids (BHAs and AHAs) is their lipid (oil) solubility. Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are water soluble and Beta-Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) are oil soluble. BHAs are able to penetrate deeper into the pore, which contains sebum and helps to control exfoliation of the dead skin cells that build up inside the pore. Salicylic Acid is the only BHA known for the treatment of acne and acne-prone skin types.

What’s Your Skin Type?

As an esthetician and someone who has spent the last 15 years working hands-on with skin, I know a thing or two about skin types and how the skin behaves with age, environment, genetics, diet and lifestyle. I believe everyone fits into a specific type, but I find the standard skin types—dry, normal, sensitive and acne-prone—too generic. I believe there are actually nine different skin types and when I work with clients, I can determine which of these nine skin types describes their skin. However, can your skin type change from season to season or even year to year?
The simplest answer is yes, your skin type can change, but generally it will slowly occur over the course of a few years (like every 7-9 years) instead of drastically changing from season to season. During seasonal changes, it is possible for certain conditions to intensify, such as oily skin types getting oilier and dry skin getting drier in the winter, but for the most part, your genetic skin type still has the same traits seasonally.

The skin is an organ and influences that can cause drastic changes to your skin include:

-Medication

-Extreme stress

-Hormonal shifts (pregnancy, menopause)

-Skin care products (changing to a new routine that may not be the best fit)

At times, it might be difficult to determine what is causing changes in your skin because these changes can be gradual. The best and easiest way to address skin type changes is to seek out professional help from an imageesthetician.

Remember to listen to your skin and know that it is unique and needs to be treated as such. Don’t do it alone when it comes to your skin’s changing needs so that you can be sure your routines and products are appropriate for your skin type. Don’t know your skin type?
